St. Monica’s Home for the Abandoned Elderly,

Whitemarl, St. Catherine

St. Monica’s Home provides effective residential care for senior citizens who are without the resources to provide and care for themselves. The Home has the capacity to house about 30 residents and offers comprehensive treatment to the elderly, as well as adults living with HIV/AIDS. Only a handful of residents have family members who provide any form of support for them. Resources are provided primarily through donations received from individuals and organizations both locally and abroad.

Riverton Meadows Early Childhood Centre

The Riverton Meadows Early Childhood Human Resource Centre is situated in one of the most depressed inner city communities of Kingston/St. Andrew. This Centre caters to children aged three to six years old from the Riverton community. The Centre also operates a homework facility and provides literacy and numeracy training to community members.

The Ministry of Education’s Early Childhood Unit provides training for teachers and policy guidelines. Monthly seminars are held to provide curriculum instruction and thereby facilitate development. There is a vibrant community support group which plays a significant role in the life of the Centre.

The Riverton Human Resource Centre also organizes the following:

  • Computer Program for children and adults
  • Feeding programme
  • Health care for the elderly through the Monsignor Richard Albert Clinic

St. Margaret’s Human Resource Centre was originally founded to cater to youth within the Olympic Gardens and Waterhouse communities and its environs. Over the years, it has opened its doors wider to accommodate individuals beyond the boundaries of these communities. This centre provides remedial education for students and also offers Heart Trust NTA Level 2 Certification courses in Woodwork and Electrical Installation. The students in the remedial programmes are prepared for the Grade Nine Achievement Test (GNAT) with hopes of re-integration to the regular school system.

This Centre also operates an outreach feeding programme, as well as a clinic that caters to the school population, the elderly and the wider community. It also operates a community library, fully sponsored by Jamaica Self Help Canada.

Catering to “at risk” youth within Seaview Gardens and its environs, this Centre offers Heart Trust NTA Level 2 Certification courses in Commercial Food Preparation, Customer Engagement Operations and Cosmetology. Monsignor Richard Albert’s vision was to transform the educational, social and living conditions of “at risk” youth in the inner city communities.
